Hood River Valley’s Connor Farlow started his junior wrestling season in fitting fashion, by winning his weight class at the annual Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Tournament on Dec. 2 at Oregon City High.
The tournament was won by Redmond; Hood River was 16th out of 22 scoring teams.
Farlow (34-6 in 2022-23) won all five of his matches, including four of them by fall. His route to the championship included first-round pins through the quarterfinals. In the 120-pound semifinal, the HRV wrestler won by a 24-10 major decision over Zach Dilworth of Century High. Farlow, who placed fourth at the 5A state tourney a season ago, won the championship last weekend with a first-round pin over Isaiah Snyder of Portland’s McDaniel. Farlow’s quarterfinal victory, a 40-second fall, came over Redmond’s Ryan Ronning.
Also at 120 pounds, HRV’s Daniel Olivas won one of three matches and placed 16th. One of his two losses was to Sam Vessey, who competed at last year’s 5A state tourney for Redmond.
Treshaun Douglass placed fifth for the Eagles at 126 pounds. Douglass lost in the quarterfinals to Kama Teijeiro of Union before bouncing back with two first-round wins by fall. Douglass finished with a 3-1 record at the tourney.
At 132, Leyton Adams was in an ultra-competitive bracket where he placed sixth, splitting his four wrestled matches. He lost in the quarterfinals to Redmond’s Billy Jackson, who was state runner-up at 120 pounds in the 2023 5A state championship. Adams stayed in contention to place with a consolation round pin over Joshua Munoz of Beaverton before he lost in the fifth-place match by fall to Wyatt Stahl of 6A Oregon City. Stahl advanced to the 6A quarterfinals at state a season ago.
At 157 pounds, Jack McLaughlin won two of three matches, and at 175 pounds, Leif Mortenson went 4-1 in the tourney. Mortenson finished third with a win by injury default in the 3rd-4th match. Mortenson’s loss came in the semifinals to Beaverton’s Sebastian Garriott, who competed in the OSAA 6A state tourney in 2023.
Also at 175, Mortenson’s teammate Connor Tennant was seventh with a 3-2 record. Tennant won his first two matches before losing his next two by fall to Sprague’s Kodesh Springer and Maximus Kaylor of Century. Tennant won the 7th-8th match by fall over Seamus Glade of Sprague. Glade competed in the 6A state tourney this past season.
