Hood River Valley scored early and often, Oct. 24, when the Eagle boys soccer team overwhelmed visiting Hillsboro, 8-0, in a Northwest Oregon Conference match at Henderson Stadium.
The game ended 13 minutes early because of the eight-goal advantage, mercy rule. The win solidified Hood River’s second place conference standing. HRV is 8-3-3 with one match to play – Oct. 29 vs. visiting Milwaukie – and 5-1-1 in the NWOC. La Salle Prep, which lost to HRV earlier this season, won the league title with a 7-1-0 record. Both Hood River and La Salle have qualified for the Class 5A state playoffs.
Against Hillsboro, Hood River senior Aran Garcia assisted on four goals, including two of senior Oscar Moline’s three tallies. Senior Andro Mendez added two goals, and senior Julian Lara had a goal and an assist.
HRV took a 1-0 lead minutes into the match when Garcia sent a crossing pass to the middle of the field where Geovanni Macias’ header redirected the ball into the upper right corner of the net. Ten minutes later, defender David Baeza sent a through ball down the right side where Mendez ran onto the ball and his shot found the upper left corner of the net.
A minute later, Garcia dribbled the ball down the left side – controlling it for more than 40 yards – before crossing a pass to the middle. Junior Solomon Parson one-touched the ball with his left foot for a 3-0 HRV lead. Garcia served up the next goal with a corner kick, which Moline put away from five yards out.
Lara figured in the first two HRV goals of the second half. He worked his way through the Spartan defense for a score of his own and later sent a corner which Moline finished giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead. Garcia and Mendez hooked up a short time later to make it 7-0 and the game ended when Moline essentially teed up a shot from 25 yards from the left middle of the field. The ball angled into the lower right corner of the net.
