HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s (HRV) girls basketball team needed two wins to remain in contention for the Class 5A state playoffs, and Coach Steve Noteboom’s squad got them this past week.
HRV (9-8 overall, 3-4 league as of Feb. 2) beat Parkrose, 49-4, and Milwaukie, 59-17, to stay one game out of the third place in the Northwest Oregon Conference (NWOC) standings. The Eagles are in sixth place, but there was a logjam of teams ahead of them to start this week. Canby (4-3), Hillsboro (4-3), and Putnam (3-3) sit in third through fifth places.
Wilsonville and La Salle are 1-2 after the first half of league play. HRV plays at Wilsonville on Feb. 4 and hosts La Salle on Feb. 10.
The top four teams in the conference automatically qualify for the 5A state playoffs.
Hood River’s wins last week were somewhat expected — Parkrose and Milwaukie are a combined 1-33 this season. The Eagles trailed 3-0 against Milwaukie before scoring the next 24 points en route to a 33-12 halftime lead.
Senior wing Julia Rowan, junior Emily Doss, and sophomore Addi Van Metre led the way for the Eagles. Rowan and Van Metre combined to miss their first four shots, but caught fire and didn’t miss the rest of the game. Rowan hit three 3-pointers in the second period and finished with 16 points on the night. Van Metre added 10 points, all in the first half. Doss scored 10 points.
