Six out of the seven local OSAA Class 1A boys basketball teams all started their non-league schedule with at least one victory last week.
The Trout Lake High Mustangs had an impressive start to their season as they recorded wins over the Ione/Arlington High Cardinals and the Powder Valley High Badgers, who were both state playoff participants last year.
The Mustangs won their opener 36-28 over the Badges Dec. 1 and they followed with a 42-40 win over the Cardinals Dec. 2. Both games were at Ione High School.
Horizon Christian
The Horizon Christian High Hawks split their first two non-league contests. The Hawks lost their season opener 65-38 to a powerhouse Class 2A Mannahouse Academy Lions (27-3 last year), a state playoff team last season. The Hawks bounced back and won 58-57 on the road over another playoff team a year ago, the 1A Willamette Valley Christian High Warriors in Brooks (near Salem).
Against WVC, the Hawks had three players score in double figures, led by 6-foot-7 sophomore post, Ben Chapman.Â
Sherman County
The Huskies opened the season with consecutive victories, including a 50-37 home win over the Country Christian High Cougars, a 2023 state playoff squad. The Huskies won their opener at home 47-18 over the Class 2A Culver High Bulldogs.
South Wasco County
The defending Big Sky League Champion South Wasco County High Redsides won one of three games to start the season. The Redsides lost their season opener 57-20 to the Class 2A Heppner High Mustangs Nov. 29 at Heppner High School. Junior Storm McCoy led the Redsides in scoring with a career-high 30 points.
The Redsides bounced back and won at home 56-49 over the 2A Irrigon High Knights Dec. 1 in Maupin. McCoy again led the Redsides in scoring with 28 points and sophomore George Barnett added 14 points. The Redsides followed with a 51-49 home loss to Country Christian Dec. 2. The Redsides trailed 51-43 with two minutes left in the contest. Their comeback effort just fell short when Barnett missed a potential game-tying, buzzer beater shot at the end of the game.
Dufur gets split
The Dufur High Rangers split their first two games. The Rangers (1-1) won their season opener 52-45 over the Central Christian High Tigers Nov. 29 in Redmond. The Rangers had three players score in double figures, led by senior Cody Phillips with 18 points, followed by Jacob Kent (11 points) and Klayton Schanno (10 points).
Lyle/Wishram
The Lyle/Wishram High Cougars opened the season with a 76-45 loss to the Class 2A Gaston High Greyhounds Nov. 29 at Gaston High School.Â
