No. 8-ranked Summit and The Dalles played close to the vest through the first three innings, but the Storm broke things open with a two-run fourth inning and then added four runs in the sixth to secure a 10-3 win Tuesday in a baseball contest played in Bend.
The two runs scored in the fourth inning came off senior ace Colton Walker, but both were unearned after two infield errors, paved the way for a 6-3 Summit lead entering the fifth frame.
TD was held hitless in the fifth and sixth innings, and then Summit padded its lead off TD reliever Spencer Honald for two runs on three hits, as part of a four-run Storm rally to make it, 10-3.
Down by seven runs in the top of the seventh inning, the Riverhawks had to contend with Summit pitcher Colby Scott.
Scott struck out TD’s Dawson Hoffman, Bailey Ortega and Walker on 11 pitches to seal the home triumph.
TD totaled two hits on the day, received three walks and had a batter hit by a pitch.
Colin Noonan and Kellen Mathisen each posted hits, Noonan also walked along with Cash Mathewson and Johnny Miller, and Matt Strizich was hit by a pitch in one of his two at-bats.
Noonan walked to lead off the first inning, and then Mathewson reached on an error to put the first two batters on base, and then Miller was issued a walk to load the bases for Mathisen.
On the first pitch he saw, Mathisen stroked a two-run double to right field scoring Mathewson and Miller to give TD a 2-0 advantage.
TD stranded two runners on base in the first, but managed to cash in an opportunity in the third inning, as Mathisen drove in Noonan, who led off the inning with a single.
Summit pitching retired the final 13 batters over the final 4 1/3 innings, seven by strikeouts.
Senior pitcher Boston Bate picked up the losing decision on the mound for the Riverhawks.
Bate, a right-hander, tossed three innings of six-hit ball with two strikeouts and four walks. Three of the four runs were earned.
The Dalles (2-5 overall) hosts 5A La Salle Prep (5-3) at 4 p.m. tonight, and then hits the road to Redmond for a non-league single game against the No. 10 Panthers (4-1) at 4 p.m. on Friday.
