THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks (6-4) concluded 2024 with a 51-48 non-league home win Dec. 30 over the Tillamook High Cheesemakers (4-6) in Class 4A boys basketball.
The Riverhawks then began the new year with a Jan. 3, 60-50, victory at Class 3A McLoughlin High (5-6) in Milton-Freewater.
Against Tillamook, the Riverhawks led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter but the Cheesemakers came back and took their only lead of the close contest at 15-14 in the second. The Riverhawks responded with a 10-4 run to build a 24-19 halftime advantage.
Junior leading scorer Derek Goulart (13 points) led a 9-2 run to help the Riverhawks take their largest lead of the game at 43-34, forcing a Tillamook timeout with 3:36 remaining in the contest. Oliver Stevens (10 points) sank two free throws for a 49-41 lead with 1:18 remaining. The Cheesemakers outscored the Riverhawks 7-1, making it 50-48 with 6.3 seconds left. The Dalles junior Reese Kinslow added a free throw with 4.7 seconds for the final margin.
Calder Morrison added 10 points for The Dalles.
In the contest versus McLoughlin, Goulart led the Riverhawks with 17 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Morrison had 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Stevens had 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
The Riverhawks play a 6:30 p.m. non-league home contest Wednesday, Jan. 8 versus the Pendleton High Buckaroos (4-8), followed by a 7 p.m. nonleague home game Jan. 10 against the La Grande High Tigers (1-7). The Riverhawks play their third game in four days in a 5 p.m. non-league home matchup Saturday, Jan. 11 versus the Astoria High Fishermen (2-7).
