April is Child Abuse Awareness month. We know, it is a heavy topic in an already stressful time, but as the directors of two local nonprofits serving children who have suffered abuse, we want to shine some light on the children and families who were already struggling with abuse risk factors before the pandemic began. These risk factors can include addiction, poverty, hunger, domestic violence and mental illness.
Abused children have a safe and comforting place right here in Hood River to disclose what happened to them.
Throughout the year, Child Abuse Intervention Centers in Oregon play a critical role in making our state a place that prioritizes the health and safety of children. There are close to 70,000 reports of abuse and neglect each year in Oregon, and almost half of all victims of abuse are under the age of 6.
The Columbia Gorge Children’s Advocacy Center (CGCAC) is having a fundraiser on Saturday, 7-10 p.m. at Springhouse Cellar in Hood River.
