Roots of Wisdom
Ecological and cultural restoration efforts guided by Native tradition and Western science are highlighted in the traveling exhibit Roots of Wisdom: Native Knowledge. Shared Science. The exhibit, on display in Columbia Gorge Discovery Center through August 8, was created and circulated by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.

A map highlights the Indigenous groups whose restoration efforst and technology are featured in Roots of Wisdom, including the Akwesasne Mohawk, Tulalip Tribes, Campo Kumeyaay Nation, Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Eastern band of the Cherokee, Inuit, Leech Lake band of the Ojibwe, Lummi Nation and Native Hawaiians.

Roots of Wisdom
A panel discusses the restoration of salmon streams threatened or degraded by dams, construction, and farming, a project of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The tribes worked successfully to share water among a variety of groups and people. As a result, salmon are now returning to habitats in which they have not been seen for 70 years, according to the panel.

The Ernest A. Kuck wing of Columbia Gorge Discovery Center now houses the travelling exhibit Roots of Wisdom: Native Knowledge. Shared Science. On display until August 8, the exhibit focuses on the ecology and cultural resources being restored, through a combination of native tradition and Western science, by Indigenous groups throughout the U.S. and Hawaii.
Highlights include the restoration of salmon and lamprey habitat; the revitalization of fish ponds in Hawaii, which are one of the island’s only sources of unimported food; the importance of river cane ecologies; the creation of surfboards, chewing gum, chocolate, and sunflowers; medicinal plants; and the biopiracy of quinoa.
