Thanks, Firefighters

Four missionaries from Church of Latter Day Saints set up a table in front of Hood River Stationers last week offering blank cards and pens for people to write notes of support to firefighters. Sisters Aurora Sperry, left, Raquel Grimaldo, Hailey Smith, Chloe Welch are assigned to service in Hood River and hail from Utah, New Mexico and St. Louis. “We figured with all the fires going on it would be nice to say thank you to the firefighters. We just thought it would be nice,” Welch said. “If people don’t write notes they thank us for doing this. They’re very thankful for what they do, so it’s been very successful.” The women said that after collecting messages they plan to deliver the cards to local fire agencies for them to pass along to firefighters. Messages from passersby included, “thank for all your amazing hard work, risk and passion”; “thank you for saving our state”; and “we love you appreciate you.” Asked about their overall work in their 18-month mission assignment, Grimaldo said, “With COVID, things are different. We try to be of service for people through yard work and things, and uplifting messages for all those who need it.” In lieu of going door-to-door, “we do a lot of work on Facebook and support local groups,” Sperry said. With a sign reminding people of safe practices, the women provided hand-sanitizer and wipes for anyone coming to the table.
