The Discovery Center and Museum is partnering with Central Cascade Alliance to help continue its new SECRETS of Our Shrub-Steppe Home program and create a sustainable source of SECRETS instructors in The Dalles area.
Central Cascade Alliance first piloted the SECRETS of Our Forest Home curriculum in five classrooms during the spring of 1997. Five years and 90 classrooms later, they have taught over 2,000 students in nine Columbia River Gorge communities.
CCA used its highly successful forest curriculum as a model for curriculum development for the SECRETS of Our Shrub-Steppe Home program, recently piloted at Chenowith Elementary in The Dalles.
CCA is offering its community "in the classroom" volunteer training series in The Dalles at the Discovery Center and Museum.
The volunteer training session will take place Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 7 through Feb. 25.
"Partnering with CCA is an extension of our mission to promote stewardship of our land," said David Weiss, public outreach coordinator and forest service interpreter at the center. "We hope volunteers get involved with this important program and help teach our children that we are all caretakers of the environment."
Upper-elementary students have known the SECRETS of our local ecosystems here in the Mid-Columbia region for over five years. The program provides upper-elementary students with science education that highlights local ecosystems and presents concepts prescribed by Oregon and Washington academic standards.
